AMMI Canada is asking for a consultation with its membership to discuss its updated policy document “AMMI Canada Code of Conduct on Managing Interactions with Industry”

AMMI Canada and its members must be compliant with the requirements of the Canada Not-for-profit Corporations Act, the Canadian Medical Association (CMA) Code of Ethics and Professionalism, CMA guidelines for physician interactions with industry, Royal College of Physician and Surgeons of Canada accreditation requirements for CPD, Innovative Medicines Canada’s Code of Ethical Practice and with AMMI Canada by-laws.

The Code of Conduct supports relationships with industry in an open and transparent manner while minimizing the impact of real, potential, or perceived conflicts of interest. It ensures that professional autonomy and independence is maintained with any financial, other in-kind support, or contractual relationship with industry.

Looks good. What about COI and guidelines development? Both in terms of funding the guideline process and in terms of COIs for committee members.

Looks good to me. I generally don’t attend industry sponsored events and if I do I pay for my own meal. For members there should be clear declaration of all funding including meals and any renumeration from industry in cash or in kind. (for example a vendor recently offered to send me some kits for COVID/RSV/Influenza to try out…I said no thereby avoiding the human desire to reciprocate in some way).

Empire of Pain by Patrick Radden Keefe (this is a long read but fascinating insight into pharma using marketing to sell product)
