ACTIVE MEMBER
Eligibility for Active Membership
Applicants for Active Membership in AMMI Canada must meet one of the following criteria:
- Physicians certified in Infectious Diseases by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or the Collège des médecins du Québec.
- Physicians certified in Medical Microbiology by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or the Collège des médecins du Québec.
- Physicians who have completed the Royal College requirements in a clinical discipline and at least two (2) years of Infectious Diseases training.
- Individuals with a doctoral degree or equivalent (e.g., Clinical Microbiologists) whose qualifications and merit are approved by the Council.
- Physicians and surgeons whose qualifications and merit approved the Council.
MEMBER-IN-TRAINING
Eligibility for Member-in-Training Membership
Applicants for Member-in-Training membership in AMMI Canada must meet the following criteria:
- Post-graduate trainees in Infectious Diseases, Medical Microbiology, or related disciplines (e.g., Clinical Microbiology fellowship programs).
- Eligibility is contingent on the applicant meeting the requirements for Active Membership upon completion of their training.
SUPPORTER MEMBER
The Supporter category of membership in AMMI Canada is designed for individuals who wish to engage with the Association and benefit from select resources and opportunities. This category provides a pathway for professionals and students who have a connection to Infectious Diseases, Medical Microbiology, or related fields but do not meet the criteria for other membership categories.
Eligibility for Supporter Membership
The Supporter category is open to individuals such as:
- Physicians and surgeons whose qualifications and merit align with the goals of the Association, however, do not meet the requirements for ACTIVE members.
- Individuals with a doctorate degree in related fields, however, do not meet the requirements for ACTIVE members.
- Registered Nurses, Medical Laboratory Technologists, Pharmacists, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, Epidemiologists, Public Health Professionals, Infection Control Practitioners, etc.
- Post-secondary, undergraduate, and postgraduate students not enrolled in residency or fellowship programs in Infectious Diseases, Medical Microbiology, or Clinical Microbiology.

MEMBERSHIP POLICIES
AMMI Canada Parental or Medical Leave Policy
Can I pause my membership?
AMMI Canada does not allow memberships to be put on hold. However, Active Members on parental or medical leave for at least six months can apply for a membership fee reduction for up to 12 months. This reduces fees but suspends certain benefits, such as discounted journal submissions and conference rates.
Members in the fee reduction period retain access to members-only website content, listservs, and online resources. Those serving in leadership roles should notify the AMMI Canada Secretariat about their ability to continue or request a hiatus.
The fee reduction must start and end within the same calendar year (January 1 – December 31) and is not retroactive. Requests must be submitted within 30 days of leave commencement. If leave spans two years, the reduction applies to the year with the majority of leave. For example, leave from November 2020 to November 2021 qualifies for a reduction in 2021.
To request a fee reduction, email membership@ammi.ca with details. Eligible members pay 50% of dues for the leave year. Full dues resume the following year. Fee reductions apply for a single calendar year per leave, even if leave exceeds 12 months.
AMMI Canada Post-Graduate Dues Transition Policy
AMMI Canada acknowledges the financial adjustment Members-in-Training face upon transitioning to full Active Membership. To ease this transition, an incremental dues increase schedule has been established:
- 1st year post-graduation: $150
- 2nd year post-graduation: $250
- 3rd year post-graduation: Full Active Member dues apply
Upon joining, Members-in-Training provide their expected graduation date. On this date, AMMI Canada will update their membership profile. Annual invoices will reflect their post-graduate year and corresponding dues.
This policy takes effect with the 2024 AMMI Canada dues cycle. The AMMI Canada Secretariat will review and update all current Members-in-Training files accordingly.
AMMI Canada Active Membership Reinstatement Policy
AMMI Canada’s membership year runs from January to December. Annual dues must be paid upon invoice receipt and no later than June 30 to maintain membership. Members who do not submit payment by this deadline will have their membership terminated.
To reinstate membership after July 1, former Active Members must:
- Contact the AMMI Canada Secretariat
- Pay a $75 administration fee
- Update their membership profile
An invoice for the administration fee will be issued, and reinstatement will occur only after payment is received.
Note: To be eligible for a chair or board position, members must have maintained two consecutive years of membership.
