Locum Infectious Disease Specialist

Nanaimo Regional General Hospital, Nanaimo, BC

We are seeking a locum infectious disease specialist at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital on beautiful Vancouver Island.   We are looking for a full-time locum physician to cover at least a 12-month parental leave starting in the fall of 2024.  Exact start date can be flexible and could start sooner if need be. We are a collegial division of 4 full time infectious disease physicians providing full service infectious disease services to middle and northern Vancouver Island.

In terms of services, we provide an inpatient consultative service to NRGH currently Monday through Friday 8am to 6pm.  There are plans to expand to 1 in 6 weekend coverage possibly in the latter half of 2024.  We also run an OPAT service at NRGH currently Monday to Friday.  We also have a unique service providing remote coverage to north island sites and attend Campbell River and Comox each twice monthly, providing inpatient and outpatient infectious disease coverage.  Our clinic is hospital based, with no overhead, where patients can be followed.  We see an array of typical community infectious disease issues such as hepatitis, HIV and NTM.

We are supported by fee for service, with MOCAP support for on call, sessional support for OPAT and we do have a travel allowance through NITAOP for up island site visits.

We are a portfolio site for the accelerating clinical trials (ACT) consortium and ID division members have been actively involved in multisite trials in the past.  There is no requirement for involvement, but this does provide a unique opportunity to be involved with clinical research at the community hospital setting.

This is the place to practice quintessential community infectious diseases with a friendly division, in a beautiful setting.  We are less than 3 hours to Tofino, making it almost mandatory to go on weekend getaways to the beaches several times a year.  Easy access to Vancouver with a high-speed passenger ferry that will take you to downtown Vancouver in just over an hour to attend concerts, sporting events or just for a night out.

We are looking for someone interested in community infectious diseases who will fit well within our division.  There also would be an opportunity to continue on afterwards as we expand our division to provide additional services.   Candidates would hold FRCPC Infectious Diseases qualification (or soon to be as new grads are welcome!) and be eligible for licensure in British Columbia through the BC College of Physicians.
