Medical Microbiologist
Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Nova Scotia Health and Dalhousie University - Halifax, NSThe Division of Microbiology in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Nova Scotia Health- Central zone and the Department of Pathology, Dalhousie University, in Halifax, Nova Scotia are inviting applications for an early career academic Medical Microbiologist.
The Queen Elizabeth II Health Science Centre is a large, tertiary care, teaching hospital affiliated with Dalhousie University. The Division of Microbiology is one of two anchor laboratories for the Nova Scotia Provincial Public Health Laboratory Network. The laboratory processes over 920,000 specimens each year and provides a full range of state-of-the-art diagnostic services for bacteriology, virology, mycology, parasitology and molecular microbiology and has a Containment Level 3 (CL3) laboratory. The Microbiology Division has close linkages with the Division of Infectious Disease in the Department of Medicine and, with them and others, has a number of active collaborative research programs including antimicrobial resistance mechanisms, and the pathogenesis of Clostridium difficile infection, respiratory viral infections and other emerging pathogens.
The successful candidate will provide medical oversight of the special pathogens and mycology sections of the microbiology laboratory including the CL3 laboratory Responsibilities include medical oversight of diagnostic testing within the section, development /evaluation / validation of new test methodologies, and communicating with end-users regarding test interpretation and utilization. In addition, the successful candidate will work with the Provincial Public Health Laboratory Network to coordinate public health related testing and surveillance between the provincial laboratories and Public Health to support an integrated response to infectious diseases.
