OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SENIOR CLINICAL ADVISOR

Position profile: The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) invites qualified physicians to apply for the 0.40-0.50 full time equivalent (FTE) position of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Senior Clinical Advisor. The successful applicant will work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team providing Occupational Health services throughout Saskatchewan. 

Occupational Medicine emphasizes prevention, and deals clinically and administratively with the health needs of both individuals and groups with respect to their working environments and includes the recognition, evaluation, control, management and rehabilitation of occupationally related diseases and injuries, and other conditions affecting ability to work. The Occupational Health and Safety Senior Clinical Advisor will promote and maintain the highest degree of physical, mental and social well being of workers in all occupations within the SHA, prevent health problems caused by working conditions and place and maintain workers in occupational environments compatible with their physical and psychological capabilities. The Occupational Health and Safety Senior Clinical Advisor will have additional training or experience and responsibilities at the provincial level, to provide expertise and assist in the development of provincial policy, programs and protocols.

Qualifications/Requirements of the position: Candidates must hold certification or be eligible for certification with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan (CPSS). Preference will be given to candidates who hold certification in Occupational Medicine or Public Health and Preventive Medicine. 

Specific Accountabilities: The Occupational Health and Safety Senior Clinical Advisor will work in a defined physician partnership with administrative leadership (Director of Quality and Safety) to provide clinical advice, direction, and the establishment and management of policies, frameworks and service delivery models for planning, implementing, monitoring, evaluation and quality improvement for occupational health programs and services. Through shared accountabilities they build and maintain a highly skilled, engaged occupational health professional staff. 

As the Occupational Health and Safety Senior Clinical Advisor, the successful candidate will: 

– Demonstrate a strong commitment to best practice; 

– Provide provincial (SHA) clinical and administrative oversight/direction as well as advice/guidance and review of SHA OHS policies and procedures, guidelines and recommendations (e.g. Monkey Pox Workplace Exposure Guidelines and associated prophylaxis). Research and collaborate with other jurisdictions nationally and internationally, as required; 

– Develop provincial medical directives in conjunction with the Senior Medical Officer and other physician leads as appropriate; 

– Chair/co-chair provincial committees and working groups to ensure provincial co-ordination and consistency of clinical OHS recommendations, decisions, and implementation; 

– Work in partnership with the Director (s), Quality & Safety to develop and progress portfolio strategic plans and goals; 

– Engage the Saskatchewan Medical Association (SMA), the Saskatchewan Association for Safe Workplaces in Health (SASWH), the Saskatchewan Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB) and Labour Relations and Workplace Safety (LRWS) to support and develop programs to promote OHS and ensure that staff health and safety initiatives are integrated and implemented by physicians; 

– Provide medical, scientific and epidemiological advice on matters related to occupational health and safety across the organization in accordance with current evidence-based practices; 

– Contribute by advising, reviewing and providing feedback to Occupational Health Nurses (OHNs) and Staff Safety regarding the development and implementation of Occupational Health policies, procedures, guidelines and recommendations; 

– Collaborate with the SHA Executive Leadership Team (ELT) and Medical Health Officer (MHO), Area Department Leads and Area Chiefs of Staff to ensure understanding and application of OHS guidelines within health care facilities; 

– Build credibility with physicians as champions for OHS; 

– Support the implementation and continued integration of OHS portfolio initiatives by physicians; 

– Forge productive collaborations with other members of the SHA (i.e., medical specialties, Public Health), the university as well as provincial (MoH) and national partners; 

– Advocate for building safety policy, creating supportive environments, and strengthening community action to improve OHS; 

– Travel within Saskatchewan may be required.
