MEDICAL MICROBIOLOGIST

Humber River Hospital - Toronto, ON

Humber River Hospital (HRH) is one of Canada’s largest acute care hospitals, fully digital, and serving a diverse catchment area of more than 850,000 people in the northwest Greater Toronto Area. HRH operates 722 acute inpatient beds with 3,400 staff, approximately 700 physicians, and over 1,000 volunteers. HRH currently includes the Wilson site, a 656-bed full service acute care facility that opened in 2015, and the Finch and Church sites, known as the Reactivation Centres (RCC). The RCC represent a unique partnership among multiple hospitals in the GTA with a focus on high quality patient recovery. A 356-bed Long Term care facility “Humber Meadows” is currently under construction at the Finch Avenue site. 

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Division of Clinical Microbiology and the Department of Medicine is seeking a 0.8 to 1.0 FTE Medical Microbiologist or PhD in Clinical Microbiology. The Humber River Hospital Laboratory is ISO 15189 accredited, with a total testing volume of 5.5 Million tests/year, that includes 630,000 tests/year in Microbiology. 

Reporting to the Chief of Pathology & Medical Director, Laboratory Medicine and to the Chief of Medicine, the successful candidate will be a highly motivated individual with demonstrated professional skills in diagnostic microbiology (including molecular microbiology), able to work in a team environment, and have excellent interpersonal and communication skills. The candidate will be required to provide microbiology consultation services in both clinical and laboratory settings, laboratory and technical expertise, and strategic guidance in Microbiology and molecular diagnostics. The candidate should have experience in a high volume setting with similar case complexity. In addition, it is expected that the successful candidate will be engaged in the evaluation, development, and utilization review of laboratory testing, and provide support for infection prevention and control. Experience in laboratory management including quality assurance, epidemiology and data analysis would be an asset. 

Applicants must hold either: 

• An MD and fellowship from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Medical Microbiology or equivalent and be a member of, or eligible for membership with the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Ontario. 

• PhD in Microbiology from a Canadian University or an equivalent qualifying degree from a recognized institution required: Certification with the Canadian College of Microbiologists required.
