AMMI Canada Awards

2017-2018 Journal of The Association of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Disease Canada (JAMMI) Trainee Review Article Award

This award is given to a trainee to promote scholarship among trainees. It is awarded for excellence in a review article on a selected topic within the disciplines of infectious diseases or medical microbiology. The monetary value of the Journal of the Association of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Disease Canada (JAMMI) Trainee Review Article Award is $1,000.

Eligibility:

    • The applicant must be in training or have completed training within two years prior to the AMMI Canada – CACMID Annual Conference 2019, April 3-6, 2019.
    • The applicant must be a trainee or have recently trained in the fields of internal medicine, paediatrics, surgery, infectious disease or medical microbiology OR be a medical student or graduate student in medical science.
    • The trainee must be principal author for multi-authored publications.
    • The manuscript must have been accepted for publication by the Journal of the Association of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Disease Canada (JAMMI).
    • Articles published from January 1st, 2017 to December 31st, 2018 will be considered.

Application Process:

The application package must include the following:

    • Current CV;
    • Final accepted version of the manuscript (English or French);
    • Copy of the acceptance email from the JAMMI.

Deadline for applications for award is January 7, 2019.

Selection procedure:

    • Members of the AMMI Canada Grants & Awards Committee will judge applications.

    • NOTE: If none of the applications meet the criteria no award will be granted for the year.

Announcement of winner: The award winner will be presented at the AMMI Canada - CACMID Annual Conference 2019 awards ceremony, April 6 in Ottawa, ON, which the recipient will be asked to attend. Travel expenses to attend the conference are the responsibility of the recipient.

2018 AMMI Canada Distinguished Service Award

This award recognizes an individual for his/her outstanding service to AMMI Canada. The monetary value of the AMMI Canada Distinguished Service Award is $1,000.

Nomination Process: Nomination letters from Active AMMI Canada members, in good standing are invited.

 The letter of nomination should include:

    • The nominee’s name and affiliation;
    • A brief professional biography of the nominee (3-page maximum; NIH biosketch format); and
    • A description of the significant service contributions the individual has made to AMMI Canada. NOTE: This summary is required for the nominee to be considered for this award. (1-page maximum)

Deadline for nominations for the 2018 award is January 7, 2019.

2018 AMMI Canada Lifetime Achievement Award

This award recognizes outstanding contributions in clinical or basic research or advocacy in the fields of infectious diseases or medical microbiology by a member of AMMI Canada. The monetary value of the AMMI Canada Lifetime Achievement award is $1,000.

Nomination Process: Nomination letters from Active AMMI Canada members, in good standing are invited.

The letter of nomination should include:

    1. Nominee’s name and affiliation;
    2. A brief professional biography of the nominee (3-page maximum; NIH biosketch format); and
    3. A narrative summary of the nominee’s career accomplishments to be used at the awards ceremony and in publications. NOTE: This summary is required for the nominee to be considered for this award (1-page maximum).

Deadline for nominations for the 2018 award is January 7, 2019.

2018 AMMI Canada Young Investigator Award

This award recognizes a promising young investigator who has already made a substantial contribution to research in fields of Infectious Diseases or Medical Microbiology.  The monetary value of the AMMI Canada Young Investigator Award is $1,000 CDN.

Eligibility: Candidates should be AMMI Canada members in good standing and be within 5 years of their first academic appointment (excluding fellowship training) as of February 1, 2018. 

Application procedure: An active member of AMMI Canada must nominate applicants. Members may nominate a single candidate per year. A second letter of support should be sought from an individual familiar with the candidate’s field of study. Individuals who are not members of AMMI Canada may provide the supporting letter.

The application package should include:

    • Letter of nomination (1);
    • Support letter (1);
    • Candidate CV using the Common CV format (CIHR Academic).

Deadline for nominations for the 2018 award is January 7, 2019.

Selection Procedure: The AMMI Canada Grants & Awards Committee will review all nominations.  Criteria that will be considered will include publication record, the ability to successfully obtain research funding, demonstrated academic independence, and recognized impact (eg. presentation at national or international conferences).

Nominators and winners will be notified of the committee’s decision in mid-February 2019. 

Unsuccessful candidates may reapply for this award if they remain within the period of eligibility.  One award will be given per year.

Announcement of winner: The award winner will be presented at the AMMI Canada - CACMID Annual Conference 2019 awards ceremony, April 6 in Ottawa, ON, which the recipient will be asked to attend. Travel expenses to attend the conference are the responsibility of the recipient

2019 AMMI Canada Honorary Membership

According to the AMMI Canada By-laws, the association can elect to bestow membership upon distinguished persons, who, without having all the qualifications for membership, have made special contributions to the fields of medical microbiology and/or infectious disease.

Nominations Process: AMMI Canada members, in good standing are invited to put forth names of potential honorary members via letter.

The letter of nomination should include:

    • The nominee’s name and affiliation;
    • The names of a minimum of two (2) Active members nominating this person;
    • A brief professional biography of the nominee (3-page maximum; NIH biosketch format); and
    • A brief narrative summary of the nominee’s accomplishments in the areas of infectious disease and/or medical microbiology. NOTE: This summary is required for the nominee to be considered for this award. (1-page maximum)

Deadline for consideration for the 2018 year is January 7, 2019.

2018 AMMI Canada Trainee Research Award

This award is given to a trainee to promote scholarship and scientific excellence among trainees. It is awarded for excellence in primary research conducted during their infectious diseases or medical microbiology training and demonstrated by publication of an original research article on a topic within the disciplines of infectious diseases or medical microbiology. The monetary value of the AMMI Canada Trainee Research Award is $1,000 CDN.

Eligibility:

    • The applicant must be either: (1) An active trainee, defined as one who is currently an AMMI Canada Member-in-Training, as specified per the criteria on the AMMI Canada website; or (2) A recently-graduated trainee, defined as one who is within one year of having completed their Royal College recognized training period in a Canadian training program, at the time of application of this award.
    • The article must have final acceptance date for publication or have been published between the dates of December 1, 2017 and November 30, 2018. NOTE: Manuscripts that are submitted in review or that are conditionally accepted (eg. manuscripts in revision, etc.) are not eligible.
    • The trainee must be first or last author of the publication. Trainees who are co-contributing first or senior authorship are also eligible.  NOTE: This must be clearly documented in the accepted manuscript.

Application procedure:

The application package must include the following:

  • Canadian Common CV (CIHR, Academic format)
  • Accepted version of the manuscript (English or French)
  • Copy of the communication from the journal documenting the date of acceptance.

Deadline for applications for the 2018 award is January 7, 2019.

2018 AMMI Canada / Biomérieux Post Residency Fellowship in Microbial Diagnostics

Funding of $35,000 CDN for one (1) one-year non-renewable fellowship is available.

Funding Timeline: The funding will be dispersed as a single payment of $35,000 CDN at the start of the fellowship in July 2019.

Eligibility Requirements:

The candidate must:

  • An AMMI Canada member in good standing.
  • Be a Canadian citizen, or permanent resident of Canada.
  • Have completed either of the following training requirements:
    • Hold an MD and have completed an ID or MM specialty in a Canadian University during the 2018 calendar year, prior to beginning this fellowship.
    • Hold a Ph.D. in a Microbiology-related field and have completed their Clinical Microbiology training at an accredited Canadian University program, during the 2018 calendar year, prior to beginning this fellowship.
  • This fellowship may take place within or outside of Canada in an institution with a recognized training program.
  • Applications should consist of translational research projects aimed to advance or improve microbial diagnostics within the areas of antimicrobial susceptibility testing, microbial detection and identification or biomarkers.
  • Preference will be given to research projects with relevance to Canada’s health community.

Application Must Include:

1) A Canadian Common CV (CIHR Academic format) is required for the applicant.

2) Supervisor CV. Formats other than the CIHR Academic format are acceptable for the supervisor’s CV but must include the following elements (4-page maximum):

2.1. Publications and presentations in the last 7 years;

2.2. Evidence of appropriate research funding and infrastructure for the proposed project;

2.3. Evidence of prior successful mentorship (including post-MD fellows, graduate students, post-doctoral students or undergraduate trainees).

3) A proposal with the details of the training program and the proposed research project/theme for which the applicant will be a major contributor (maximum five pages in length). The proposal should clearly include:

    • Title
    • How the research will advance knowledge relevant to Canada’s health community and why it is important;
    • Describe the role of the candidate in the project;
    • Description of the proposed project which includes:
      • Study design;
      • Sample size calculation;
      • Tools used to collect data;
      • Plan for analysis, feasibility etc.; and
      • Description of and strengths of the training environment.

4) A letter of acceptance from the supervisor of the fellowship program and research project. This letter must give assurances that the supervisor and his/her university fully support this fellowship.

5) A letter of support from the program director of the applicant’s training program.

6) Two additional letters of support from other previous supervisors.

All Applications Must Be Completed and Received in Electronic Format by The AMMI Canada Secretariat No Later Than January 7, 2019.

Review of Applications: Applications will be judged according to the scientific merit and feasibility of the research proposal; the strength and experience of the candidate; and the quality of the research environment. If none of the applications are deemed suitable for the Fellowship, then none will be awarded for the year of 2018.

Announcement of Winners: The recipients of the fellowship will be announced at the AMMI Canada - CACMID Annual Conference 2019. The results of the research project must be presented (poster/oral) at the AMMI Canada - CACMID Annual Conference within 12 months of completion of the fellowship. Travel expenses for the recipient’s travel to Conference will be the responsibility of the recipient. The successful applicant will be notified by mid-February of 2019.

Terms and Conditions: 

    1. A written report must be submitted to AMMI Canada at the end of the 1-year fellowship.
    2. Candidates must commit to full time research activities during the term of the fellowship. Non- research related clinical activities are permitted only if they do not exceed 10% of the candidate’s time.
    3. The term of the award is one year, beginning July 1, 2018 and may not be deferred.
    4. Indirect costs to institutions will not be paid for this fellowship.
    5. AMMI Canada considers awardees to be in training for the purposes of eligibility for other awards and honours.
    6. The recipient may apply for other fellowship funding up to the amount of the 2019 AMMI Canada / bioMérieux Post Residency Fellowship. Eligibility for other fellowships will be at the discretion of the Grants and Awards committee and must be confirmed in writing.
